Dangerous driving, impaired charges laid after pickup veers off road and kills pedestrian

Calgary police have charged a man in connection with the death of a pedestrian earlier this year.

A 36-year-old man died at the scene after he was hit by a vehicle that veered off Edmonton Trail near the intersection with Second Avenue N.E. on April 20 just before 3 p.m.

The victim was standing on a grassy area when he was hit by the pickup truck.

After hitting the pedestrian, the truck continued across the grassy area and into the end of the Second Avenue cul-de-sac, where it hit another vehicle.

The driver of the 2020 Ford Ranger was arrested at the scene.

On Tuesday, police said in a release that Robin Erskine, 38, of Calgary has now been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death and one count of operating a vehicle while over the prescribed limit causing death.

They said impaired driving was suspected as a factor in the collision.

"Many lives have been negatively affected by this collision, and we once again want to remind Calgarians about the significant risks of driving while impaired," said Sgt. Colin Foster.

"It simply isn't worth the risk. Our condolences go out to the victim's family and friends."
