Impaired driving charge laid after fatal Coalhurst collision

A Lethbridge man has been charged with failing to provide a blood sample in the aftermath of a fatal highway collision Monday in Coalhurst, Alta., RCMP say.

A Lethbridge man has been charged with failing to provide a blood sample in the aftermath of a fatal highway collisionearlier this week in Coalhurst, Alta., RCMP say.

A woman was killedwhen her SUV was struckby a car as she waited at a stop sign in the southern Alberta town on Monday.

The woman was stopped at the 51st Avenue intersection on Highway 3 when a westbound Volkswagen Jetta collided with her Ford Escape at about 7:15 p.m.

The 66-year-old woman, who was alone in the SUV, died at the scene.

The driver of the Jetta was taken to the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge with undetermined but non-life-threating injuries.

On Wednesday,RCMP said Wesley Brian Phillips, 36, has been charged with refusing to give a blood sample, which is a Criminal Code offence related to impaired driving. Additional charges could be laid.

Phillips is set to appear in provincial court in Lethbridge on Jan. 17, 2020.

The name of the woman who died will not be released, RCMP said.
