Flood damage delays construction of pedestrian bridge

Parts of the new pedestrian bridge to St. Patrick's Island are being disassembled because of last month's flooding.

The river water damaged some of the construction material on the bridge, which crosses from the East Village to the island and over to Bridgeland.

As a result, the new crossing will not be completed this fall as scheduled, said Michael Brown, president of the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.

"We've adjusted the time frame about, we're looking at a year out in terms of getting it down," he said.

"Parts of that bridge are going to have to come down and go back up. But as we get farther along and we know more, we look to refine those dates."

Additional costs for the $25-million bridge will be covered by the contractor's insurance.
