Two adults are dead after an early-morning house fire in Calgary's northeast, the Calgary Fire Department said in a release on Saturday.

It responded to calls of a fire in the community of Harvest Hills around 1:20 a.m. on Sept. 10.

When crews arrived at the scene, the department saidfirefighters saw smoke coming from an attached garage of a multi-family complex.

Crews were able to contain the fire in the garage, but found two adults insidewho were immediately pronounced dead.

One otheradult and two childrenwho also lived in the complex were able to escape without injury.

"Fortunately the doors to the adjacent units were closed, so the fire was contained to the garage," Gordon Best, the north district chief with the department, told CBC News.

It was likely an"event-limited fire," the fire chief said, which means it ran out of oxygen and began to die down before it could spread.

"Thefire itself didn't cause a great deal of damage, but obviously there's the human toll that occurred."

Arson investigators are on scene to determine the cause and originsof the fire, Best said.
