Shortbread takes holiday baked good bracket by generous margin

In The Homestretchs holiday baked good bracket, shortbread has come out on top after beating out butter tarts in more than a week of voting.

Butter tarts take 2nd place out of 16 winter treats after more than week of voting

Shortbread, left, received more than 57 per cent of the vote in our holiday baked good bracket when facing off against butter tarts. Those sweet options were the last two of 16 in total. (Kimberley Copithorne, Paula Sanderson)

The numbers are in.

In The Homestretch's holiday baked good bracket, shortbread has come out on top after beating out butter tarts in more than a week of voting.

A total of 16 winter treats faced our online voting challenge with columnists and members of The Homestretch team championing their favourites.

Terri Campbell, The Homestretch's producer, had defeated gingerbread, then vinaterta and finally sugar cookies with a Canadian staple: butter tarts.

But in the final round, more than 57 per cent picked shortbread, with988 votes. Butter tarts managed to attract just shy of 43 per cent of the votes at 733.

So associate producer Ellis Choe's pick, buttery, melt-in-your mouth shortbread, which conquered fruitcake, torrone and turtles, was the overall favourite of our holiday baked good bracket.
