Inmate escapes from Bowden Institution

Another inmate has walked away from the medium-security Bowden Institution, about 100 kilometres north of Calgary.

Damien Justin Swords, who was serving a sentence for property-related crime, escaped from the minimum-security farm annex on Thursday night, said the Innisfail RCMP on Friday.

Swords is described as an Inuit male, about five feet, 10 inches tall, weighing about 190 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and possibly a dark-coloured jacket.

Police released a photo of Swords but said his hair is currently shorter than pictured.

The reduced-security annex features a 316-hectare farm that includes a composting operation, cattle feedlot and hay and barley crops. About three dozen inmates and three staff live on the property adjacent to the medium-security prison.

The federal government is phasing out inmate-run farms over the next two years because they cost too much to operate.

In December, a man serving a sentence for breaking and entering, theft and extortion walked away from the annex in -23 C weather. Following footsteps in the snow, police quickly recaptured the inmate.

A convicted murderer,David Livingston, 61, escaped from the same farm annex in September 2008. He turned himself in three days later in Prince Albert, Sask.
