Key S.E. ring road interchange construction to detour traffic

Worktocomplete theinterchange at Stoney Trail and Glenmore Trail, a key piece of the southeast leg of Calgarys ring road project, is now underway.

The intersection at 84th Street and Glenmore Trail S.E. will be permanently closed to north and southbound traffic as of May 31 at 7 p.m. MT.

So far the province has invested $1.9 billion in the Calgary ring road project, including $175 million of federal funds, said Garry Lamb, the urban construction manager for Alberta Transportation.

"The ring road is a very major road network for the citizens of Calgary," he said.

Traffic will continue to flow on Glenmore Trail while the interchange is finished,the city said.

Motorists driving south on 84th Street S.E. will be detoured west along a newly-opened section of Peigan Trail, then south on52nd Street, and south again to 114th Avenuewhere they can head east to reconnect with 84th Street.

Motorists travelling north on 84th Street S.E. will be rerouted west along 114th Avenue to 52nd Street to connect with Glenmore Trail or continue north to Peigan Trail where they will head east to reconnect with 84th Street.

The city has marked a separate, high-load detour east on 61st Avenue S.E., south on 100th Street and then west on Venture Avenue to reconnect with 84th Street.

Local traffic needing access to 84th Street S.E. will also use the high-load route.

The city is reminding drivers that fines double in construction zones when workers are present.

The provincial government signed a 33-year agreement with Chinook Roads Partnership to design, build, operate and partially finance this leg of the Stoney Trail ring road from its junction with 17th Avenue S.E., south along Calgarys eastern limit, then west along Stoney Trail to just east of the Macleod Trail interchange.

This section of the ring road will be open to traffic on Oct. 1, bringing the overall project to 70 per cent of completion.

The northwest section of Stoney Trail is now getting upwards of 50,000 vehicles per day, Lamb said.

"Were certainly anticipating that the southeast Stoney will have a major impact in this area as well," he said.
