Kidsport Calgary struggles as demand spikes 80%

An organization that helps Calgary parents cover the cost of getting their children into sports programs has seen an 80per cent spike in demand so far this year.

The Calgary and Area Kidsport chapter has been providing financial assistance to families for more than 20 years.

The agency has already reduced the amount it provides to each child, from $400 to $250 per year.

The growth in demand is related to the downturn in the local economy, says executive director Kevin Webster.

He says at this rate, the organization might have to start turning families away.

"Last year we helped over 4,200 kids," he said.

"We want to continue the success of making sure sports is a reality for every kid in our community, and that when their families are faced with tough decisions, sport isn't one of the things they have to take off the schedule."

Webster says he hopes Calgarians who can afford it will step up and donate to Kidsport.
