Midfield Mobile Home Park officially shuttered as eviction notice passes

The Midfield Trailer Park in northeastCalgary is now officially a place of the past.

Almost four years after the city decided to close the park, Monday marked the last day to move out. Excavators were already on hand removing any trace of the trailers that once stood in the tight-knit community.

It's a moment that has been coming since May2014when the city handed out eviction notices because of deteriorating water and sewer lines for the roughly 170 trailers on site, although the residents fought that decision in court.

They were originally supposed to leave last September, but that was delayed until a judge ruled in December that the city had followed the law. The new eviction date was set for Feb. 19, which happens to be Family Day in Alberta.

The saga started in 2007 whenthe city said the mobile home park needed to be closed due to itsdeteriorating condition and residents would be relocated to a new park on 84th Street N.E.

By 2014, though, the relocation plan was scrapped due to costs, but the plan to close Midfield in 2017 was left in place.

The city offered $10,000for each trailer, and up to an additional $10,000 for moving expenses.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said in December the site will eventually be redeveloped, but the city doesn't have a plan for that yet.
