The Mustard Seed has been given the go-ahead to lease out the parking stalls at its new downtown affordable housing tower.

The charity was required to build the 79-stall underground parkade as part of its development permit for the 1010 Centre, even though most of the people living there do not have cars.

The Mustard Seed asked the city for permission to rent out the spaces, saying it would give them up to $350,000 per year in much needed revenue.

The city granted the change-of-use permit late last month.

We are very grateful and relieved, said Cliff Wiebe, managing director of theMustardSeed.

Most of the residents of the 1010 Centre do not have vehicles, so they dont need parking. Now we can lease the stalls and utilize the parkade to its fullest.

As many stalls as are needed by residents of the building at 10th Avenue and Centre Street will be kept out of the rental pool, the charity said.

Its not yet known when the parking spaces will be made available to the public.
