City water park remains closed after leak requires second round of repairs

Chlorine levels and a floor surface that left kids cut and grazed shut down the pool at Prairie Winds Park in the northeast, less than a week after it opened in August 2017.

'We don't have a definitive understanding of what caused but we're focused on fixing it'

First it was chlorine levels and a floor surface that left kids cut and grazed that shut down the pool at Prairie Winds Park in the northeast, justa few daysafter it opened in August 2017.

Now a problem leak means the pool remains closed as Calgary's short outdoor pool season gets underway.

"Upon starting up the pool for this year we did discover there were new issues," said Michelle Wongwith the City of Calgary.

"We have confirmed there was a leak in some of the piping," Wong said.

The pool was supposed to be open by Father's Day weekend. Right now it's fenced off and drained.

"We did a number of tests with water, as well as without water, and we were able to pinpoint and open up a section of the pool," said Wong.

The construction company that built the park is also working to fix a second leak before the pool and lazy river can reopen.

"We don't have a definitive understanding of what caused it but really what we're focused on is fixing it and getting it open as soon as possible," said Wong.

"It's very frustrating, not just for myself as the project lead, but for all the neighbourhood kids," Wong added.

Parents like Aman Khaira say they are looking forward to the park reopening with all of the problems fixed, hopefully in time for summer. (Dan McGarvey/CBC)

Despite the main pool closure some parents and kids are still using the adjoining spray park, which is still open.

"I'm looking forward to it reopening, but the safety of the kids is the top priority," said Aman Khaira.

"The pool is for kids, so as long as they're safe and they're enjoying it and they're happy then I'm looking forward to it," said Khaira.

The work is under warranty and won't cost the city any additional money.

There is no word on when the park will re-open.
