1 dead, 2 injured after multi-vehicle collision west of Calgary

Traffic has resumed on Highway 8 west of Calgary after a multi-vehicle collision Tuesday night that left one person dead and sent two others to hospital.

Traffic has resumed on Highway 8 west of Calgary after a multi-vehiclecollision Tuesday night that left one person dead and sent two people to hospital.

Shortly after4 p.m., Cochrane RCMP, EMSand fire services from Redwood Meadows and Rocky View Countyresponded to a 911 call, Mounties said.

Two trucks and an SUV collided on Highway 8, approximately 500 metres east of the Highway 22 traffic circle. That'sabout 20 kilometres west of Calgary city limits.

RCMP said its preliminary investigation indicates that the SUV was travelling west on Highway 8 when the driver hit the brakesand slid on ice into oncoming traffic, where the vehicle hit a heavy-duty pick-up truck.

The SUV spun back into the westbound lane where it struck another pick-up truck that had been traveling westbound behind it.

The driver of the SUV suffered serious injuries, whilethe 72-year-old female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, RCMP said. Both were from Cochrane, Alta.

For several hours, Highway 8 east of the Highway 22 traffic circle was blockedand traffic was being divertedwhile the collision wasinvestigated, but has now been cleared.

RCMP said that no further updates are anticipated.
