It was a busy weekend for Red Deer RCMPwithfive driversfacing impaired driving charges, including some caught in checkstops.

"The reckless choice to drive impaired endangers lives, and our message to these people is that your choices will catch up with you," says Sgt. Al Nickolson.

RCMP set up a checkstop at 50th Avenue and 45th Street on Saturday night and a second at 32nd Street and Springfield Avenue early Sunday morning.

Three impaired drivers were caught and several other tickets were handed out, police say.

In addition, a 24-year-old Lacombe woman is facing a number of charges including impaired driving after hitting a 52-year-old Red Deer man early Saturday morning outside the Westerner Grounds. He was treated at hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and released.

Just hours later police saw a truck driving dangerously on 32nd Street. A traffic stop revealed an impaired 18-year-old Red Deer woman, police say.

"We are out there every day and every night, looking for impaired drivers through checkstops and patrols, and following up on reports called in by concerned citizens," Sgt. Al Nickolson said.

Police say witnesses can report a suspected impaired driver by calling 911 and giving a description of the vehicle and driver, licence plate and location and direction of travel.
