The City of Red Deer has reached the milestone population of 100,000.

"This is a transformative, defining, game changing moment for our city," said Mayor Tara Veer.

The final count of last year's municipalcensus for Alberta's third largest city tallied up to 100,807, which was up 2.2 per cent from 2014.

To mark the occasion the city plans to hold a contest to find its 100,000th citizen. More details will be announced on the city's social media accounts in the near future.

The city says 2,222 more citizens called Red Deer home in 2015. (City of Red Deer)
