Police are calling it a very sad situation, after an 85-year-old Calgary man was charged with killing his 80-year-old wife in an upscale southwest Calgary community early Tuesday morning.

"Very rare, fortunately. Very rare and very tragic," Insp. Don Coleman of Calgary police told reporters at a news conference.

Officers responded to a residence in the 3000 block of Rideau Place S.W. at around 4:15 a.m. after reports that someone had died.

Coleman said it was the suspect who called 911 and was co-operative with police.

"Investigators believe the victim was assaulted during the early morning hours, though it is not yet known what prompted the attack. There was no history of domestic violence that police are aware of at this time," he said.

When asked if mental health issues may have been a contributing factor, Coleman said that is not a police issue.

"If there are medical issues, that will come to light then," Coleman said of the hearing process.

Truly a tragedy

The man has been charged with second-degree murder and has a court appearance scheduled for Wednesday.

"It is truly a tragedy for that family," the inspector said.

Police are talking to neighbours but want to talk with anyone who might have information on the incident.

Witnesses can contact police through the non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
