Fatal shooting in Riverbend resembles other homicides, Calgary police say

Police say a shooting that killed a young man in the southeast Calgary neighbourhood of Riverbend resembles other homicides in the city. Officers are now on the hunt for suspects and a dark-coloured vehicle that may have left the scene.

Police say a shooting that killed a young man in the southeast Calgary neighbourhood of Riverbend resembles other homicides in the city.

Officers responded toa house around10:50 a.m. in the 100 block of Riverbend Drive S.E., prompting temporary road closures in the area.

"Upon arrival, a man in his 20s was found seriously injured in the back seat of a car that was parked on the driveway of a residence," said police in a release.

"He was declared deceased on scene."

An autopsy is expected on Tuesday and the homicide unit has been called in to investigate.

Insp. Don Coleman with the major crimes sectionsaid the victim is known to police andthey are looking for a dark-coloured minivan or SUV based on witness accounts.

Believed to be a targeted attack

Coleman said it appears the shooting was targeted and there is no immediate danger to the public.

"There's some earmarks, some similarities between other homicides we've had, but it's still too early to determine what exactly occurred, or what the motivation might have been."

Doug Chambers, who has lived in the neighbourhood for 21 years, said he heard some bangsbut thought it was related to ongoing construction on a neighbour's roof.

"I heard what I think was three rapid bangs, followed fairly shortly by anotherone," he said.

"I never thoughtanything of it.... It wasn't until probably 15, 20 minutes later, I came out of the basement and looked out the window and saw all the actionout there."

Interviews ongoing

Coleman said interviews with neighbours and witnesses are ongoing and there is no suspectat this time.

Investigators are also looking at some incidents in the community, which Coleman did not elaborate on, thatmight be related.
