More than 100 Parks Canada staff to lose jobs in Alberta

More than100 Parks Canada workers in Alberta's nationalparks are losing their jobs.

And the jobs of a few hundred more are under review and could have their hours shortened.

In Jasper, 16 positions will be eliminated entirely, while 30 seasonal workers will see theirseasons shortened.

The cuts also include 13 positionsin Banff, eight in Waterton and 13 in Lake Louise and Yoho, said regional union vice president Kevin King.

The cuts willaffectpark towns, he said.

"The communities which rely on the disposable incomes of these individuals are certainly going to be impacted and I really question what tourists are going to do coming to mountain park when decent public services are not being provided," said King.

King does not have the full job break down yet, although park wardens and other conservation positions don't seem significantly affected.

He noted 42 workers at hot springs in Banff and Jasperreceived notice.

"There appears to be a plan to contract out jobs at the hot springs enterprise unit," he said.
