Volunteers get Prince's Island ready for Calgary Folk Fest

An army of volunteers descended on Prince's Island Park Sunday to get the area ready for the Calgary Folk Festival.

More than 250 people showed up to to help get the park in shape for the festival. The park was virtually underwater at the height of last week's flooding and with three weeks until the start of the summer music festival, volunteers are determined to dig out from under the silt and depris.

"They are really giving blood, sweat and tears," said Parks worker Kim McCulley. "This is a job where they're going to be shovelling silt and putting it in wheelbarrows and then dumping it in a spot where our machinery can come in and pick it up."

Everything from blue recycling bins to parts of people's decks were washed onto the island during the flood.

The Calgary Folk Festival, which is celebrating its 34th year,is expected to draw more than 50,000 people to Prince's Island Park over the course of four days.
