Wings, wheels, bacon and science: What's on in Calgary this weekend

It's Father's Day weekend, which means Dad-friendly events. Homestretch director Tracy Fuller found some, which she shared with host Doug Dirks on Thursday's show.

Wings and Wheels

This weekend the Hangar Fight Museum in northeast Calgary is hosting itsWings and Wheels Father's Day weekend. There's a show and shine with a bunch of classic cars. There are special tours that take you inside of the historic aircraft in the museum. There are even helicopter tours weather permitting for an extra fee. And dads get in for free all weekend, as long as they bring someone along with them. That's this Saturday and Sunday at the Hangar Flight Museum, from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. both days.

Science Dads

Not every dad wants to stay home and watch the final round of the U.S. Open golf tournament. For dads who like science, head down to Telus Spark. Dads get in free there, too or depending on your family composition, one adult will get in free on Sunday. There will be a special barbecue serving up burger towers for lunch, as well as beer and wine tastings, plus science demonstrations for the whole family.

Fort Calgary

If all else fails, Fort Calgary is hosting a Father's Day brunch with all the bacon, sausage and every other delicious brunch item you can think of. (Think cheese platter, meat platter and omelettestation.) It runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. You do need tickets.

Neighbour Day

Not only is it Father's Day, but it's also Neighbour Day, and many community associations across the city are taking it upon themselves to hold barbecues and potlucks. The BumpFestival, which is responsible for all those amazing murals along the Beltline, is hosting a Neighbour Day party, where they're also unveiling their new artists for this summer's BumpFestival, which happens in August. This weekend's event runs from 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Central Memorial Park. Meanwhile, in the Falconridge-Castlewood Community, they're celebrating old school with a pancake breakfast from 9 a.m.to 11 a.m. and activities, like bouncy castles, hay rides, face painting and more. There are tons of other Neighbour Day activities going on, so check your local community association and maybesay hi to your neighbour Saturday.

Roll Out Skate Festival

We all marked a sad day when Lloyd's roller rink closed last year. But guess what? Roller skating isn't dead in Calgary! Instead, a group of passionate roller-skaters is going rogue they're launching a brand new roller skating festival here in Calgary called Roll Out. It starts with more traditional skate parties on Friday night and Saturday night just like when you went to Lloyds and during the days on the weekend, they are going to have workshops, so you can learn about Park Skate, roller dance, and a whole lot more.

Millarville

It's definitely farmer's market season. And while we have a vast selection of both permanent and seasonal farmer's markets here in the city, June, July and August are when the other smaller communities ramp up their local offerings, meaning it's prime time to hit the highway and check out a farmer's market. One of the best, the Millarville Farmers Market, kicks off its summer season this week. In addition to the market, there's a Millarville run to the farmer's market half marathon, a two-person relay half marathon and an intriguing sounding event called the Cinnamon Bun Run, which is divided into two categories: the bunner, where you stop twice along the route to eat a cinnamon bun and the runner, which is a no-eating category. Whether you are a bunner or a runner, head on over to the Millarville Racetrack this Saturday. It's three dollars to get into the Farmer's Market -- and if you want to register for the races, there's still time.

Veg-Fest

For foodies who aren't fans of bacon, how about the third annual Veg-Fest? Calgary's vegetarians and vegans are taking over Shaw Millenium Park Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. There will be speakers, a marketplace, games, music, food trucks, a kids' activity zone. The festival is dog friendly. There will also be interpreters for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, so everyone can get the most out of the day.

Sounds of Summer Street Party

Another essential weekend element for a sunny summer weekend in Calgary is ice cream. and this weekend, the makers of some of the best, Fiasco Gelato, are hosting a huge street party in their Gelato Factory parking lot at 221 18th Street S.E. on Saturday, with a lineup that includes incredible acts. The Sounds of Summer Festival features performances by Stars, Dan Mangan, Boreal Sons and Reuben Young to name but a few. Doors open at 2 p.m., music starts at 3, there will be food trucks and drinks and activities for kids, including a 40-ft. (12 m)inflatable obstacle course.
