Woodbine fatal hit-and-run suspect son of Calgary police officer

One of the suspects in a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorist in Woodbine on Thursday is an underage son of a Calgary police officer, CBC News has learned.

The incident began when aTsuut'inapolice officertried to stop a pickup truck that Calgary police believe had been stolen fromChestermere.

The truck sped out of the reserve into Calgary, driving down37thStreet near130thAvenue S.W. in the wrong lane, before colliding head-on with a car andkilling its drivera man in his 50s.

Calgary police arrested two suspects at the scenea male youth, who cannot be named,and 26-year-oldJanelle Umbherville. CBC News has learnedshewas out of custody on bail in connection with other offences.

3rd suspect still at large

The young malewas charged with possession of stolen property and occupying a stolen motor vehicle. Hewas released from custody on a promise to appear in court at a later date, police say.

A third man, believed to be the driver of the pickup, is still at large. Police say investigators believe they know who he is.

Umbhervillefaces six new charges including possession of stolen property, taking a motor vehicle without consent and breaching the conditions of her release.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating theTsuut'inapolice department's involvement in the incident.
