3-year moratorium placed on inner-city social housing

Edmonton city council has approved a three-year moratorium on city-supported social housing in five inner-city neighbourhoods.

However, the time-period was less than the five to ten years recommended by city administration.

Rob Stack of the McCauley Community League argued that central Edmonton neighbourhoods have had more than their fair share of shelters and other community services andbelieves that three years isn't long enough.

"In a sense, it could still be open season on these neighbourhoods because it takes three years to put a project together," Stack said.

"The time period is so short that right away we have to start talking about policy to have rational policy going into the future to prevent increased concentration from happening again."

The moratorium includes the communities of McCauley, Eastwood, Queen Mary Park, Alberta Avenue and Central McDougall.
