Controversial Tory MLA Carl Benito lost his party's nomination in Edmonton-Mill Woods Tuesday night.

Controversial Tory MLA Carl Benito lost his party's nomination in Edmonton-Mill Woods Tuesday night.

Instead the vote went to businessman Sohail Quadri on the second ballot.

Quadri immigrated to Canadafrom Pakistan and is an active volunteer in the community.

Benito has made a few headlines throughout his term in office.

Questions were raised about his ethics when he failed to pay property taxes on time andthen blamed his wife for the oversight.

Benito paid the amount,said to be around $8,000 onfour properties, in November 2010after the province's ethics commissioner made theoverdue taxes public in a report.

Benito said after he was elected, his wife agreed to take over the job of paying the couple's bills.

When he was first elected in 2008, Benito promised to give his salary to charity, but later reneged, saying he only meant to donatea portion of it.
