Edmonton police charge man with theft for defrauding grandmother of $265k

An Edmonton man is facing theft charges for allegedly bilking his grandmother out of more than $200,000 while he was acting as her Power of Attorney after she had a stroke.

Edmonton Police have charged a man with theft and fraud for allegedly defrauding his elderly grandmother of $265,000. (CBC)

An Edmonton man is facing theft charges for allegedlybilkinghis grandmother out of more than $200,000 while he was acting as her Power of Attorney after she had a stroke.

Between August 2010 and August 2014, the 53-year-old man made out multiple cheques to himself while he was acting as Enduring Power of Attorney, police allege.

The man's grandmother, 94, contacted detectives once she regained the capacity to make decisions in May 2014.

"This is a prime example of a senior citizen being preyed upon by a family member that she trusted," said Det. DaveHuggins, formerly of EPS Senior Protection.

"Sadly, both her health, and her grandson, failed herat a time in her life when she should have been able to count on him."

Following a five-month investigation, theman has beencharged withtheft by person holding power of attorneyandfraud over $5,000.
