Krushell not running for 4th term on Edmonton council

Three-term councillor Kim Krushellwill not seek re-election this fall.

Some pundits believed Krushell might take arun at the mayor's office, but over thenoon hour she told reportersshe needs more time for her familyafterthree terms.

"I'm one of those people who can gain energy from the crowd and I'm going tomiss hanging out with a lot of people at different community league meetings, working on some of the community projects," she told reporters.

"I think I'll volunteer," she said."I'm not disappearing. I definitely have come to the point where I need a break."

Krushell will join Mayor Stephen Mandel and Coun. Jane Batty on the sidelines in the October election.

Only three councillorsAmarjeet Sohi, Ben Henderson and Dave Loken have confirmed they intend to run for another term.

So far the list of candidates vying for mayor is a short one, including only Coun. Kerry Diotte and community volunteer Curtis Penner.

Conservative MP Peter Goldring has hinted he might join the race.

Former city councillor, and two time mayoralty candidate,Mike Nickel, is holding a news conference Wednesday to announce that he will run in the election but it's not clear yet if it will be for council ormayor.

Nickel was defeated as acouncillor in 2007 byDon Iveson,who is expected, along withCoun. Karen Leibovici,to run for the mayor's chair.

Leibovici is announcing her planson Thursday.

The nomination deadline is Sept 23rd, with the election on Oct. 21st.
