A man is dead after a crash on Highway 63 in northern Alberta, known as one of the most deadly stretches of road in the province.

RCMP say the driver of a pickup lost control of his vehicle just before 10:30 p.m. Friday near Marianna Lakes, Alta., when a severe snowstorm blanketed Highway 63 with several centimetres of slush.

The southbound pickup crossed the centre line of the highway and collided head-on with a vehicle travelling in the other direction, an incident that closed the highway for over five hours.

The driver of the car, 21,was trapped inside the wreckage with severe injuries and despite the efforts of emergency officials and bystanders, was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The driver of the pickup, whowas treated for minor injuries, wasn't licensed to drive in Canada and police said they are still determining whether charges might be laid.
