McCauley social housing project meets opposition

The McCauley Community League is gearing up for another court battle over a social housing project in the downtown Edmonton neighbourhood.

The McCauley Community League is gearing up for another court battle over a social housing project in the downtown Edmonton neighbourhood.

It's going to the Court of Appeal to fight a 42-unit building for people with chronic addictions. Construction is already half finished.

Community league president Rob Stack says it doesn't meet zoning requirements.

"It's being permitted as just a straight-out standard apartment building," Stack said. "However, it'sour opinion that it actually isn't a conventional apartment building as it has a huge amount of support services within the building and it's more of a care facility."

Stack said McCauley already has more than its share of social housing.

"Our neighbourhood has a huge concentration of supportive housing projects, which is irresponsible planning and irresponsible funding from a city planning, urban planning perspective. We should be spreading that housing out throughout the city."

This will be the third social housing project the community has taken to court.

The agency building the project could not be reached for comment.
