Homicide detectives are searching for a suspect after a shooting left a man dead on a sidewalk in north Edmonton.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Friday night, police were called to a reported shooting in a suburban neighbourhood in the area of 69th Street and 165th Avenue, on Ozerna road.

When they arrived, a man was found on the sidewalk in front of a home suffering from gunshot wounds. He died at the scene.

Although the victim was found dead outside a house, the occupants of that home do not appear to be related to the man's death in any way, Insp. Regan James said Friday night.

Police are looking for a black, older-model Toyota sedan, possibly a Corolla or Camry. The vehicle was seen leaving the area heading south on Ozerna Road.

The driver the lone occupant of the car is described as an East Indian man in his late 20s to early 30s, with short dark hair, about 5'8"to 5'10" and weighing between 180 and 200 pounds.

He was wearing a dark sweater and blue jeans.

"[We're] urging the public, if they've seen that vehicle or know who that person might be, to contact us," James said.

Ensaaf Kamaledding lives in the neighbourhood. She said she was sitting in her living room when she heard multiple gunshots Friday evening.

She said she ran to a front window in time to see a black vehicle driving away, and a man lying in a pool of blood on the sidewalk.

Co Pham, who lives across the street from where the man was found dead, said he saw someone passing by in a vehicle. That person stopped, got out, and called 911 right away.

He said a crowd gathered across the street from where the man lay bleeding, but people dispersed quickly.

Kamaledding and Pham said the police and other emergency services arrived within minutes and stayed until the earlyhours of the morning.

Kamaledding said in her 14 years in the neighbourhood, she's never experienced anything like that.

"Everyone's surprised how that happened," said. "We don't have any problems."

Pham said the situation is worrisome.

"We hope everything goes ok, and the neighbourhood is quiet like before,"

The victim has not yet been identified, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Edmonton Police Service continues to investigate.
