St. Albert residents warned of possible cougar sighting

RCMP are warning about a possible cougar sighting in St. Albert.

Just before 9 p.m. Monday, police were called by someone who thought they'd seen a cougar in a wooded area near Bellerose High School.

Corp. Laurel Kading told CBC News this morning that fish and wildlife officers now think the cougar may have moved to the Lacombe Park area of St. Albert.

Police are asking residents to take the following precautions:

• walk or run in groups;
• walk pets on a leash and don't leave them outside in the yard;
• parents are asked to walk their children to bus stops this morning ... especially on streets near wooded areas.

Wildlife officers are investigating.

Cougars hunt at any time of day but are most active at dawn and dusk.

If you see a cougar, back away and make yourself as large as possible.

Once you're safe, report the sighting immediately by calling 911.
