Thousands hit the pavement for breast cancer research

There was plenty of pink in downtown Edmonton Sunday morning as the annual CIBC Run for the Cure took off from Churchill Square.

More than 9,000 Edmontonians came out this year to participate in the event, which raises funds and awareness about breast cancer.

The Run for the Cure events, which are held across the country, are one of the biggest fundraisers for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Organizer Necha Aitken says the runs help bring people together.

"I think they're very important not just for the funds raised but it's such an inspiring thing to be surrounded by people fighting for the same cause that you're fighting for."

This year, organizers in Edmonton said the run raised more than $1.42 million for breast cancer research, health education and advocacy programs.

Time and time again, the Edmonton community along with the entire Prairies/[Northwest Territories] Region amazes us with their dedication to the Foundation and breast cancer cause, said Bonnie Megley, who is with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, in a release made Sunday.

The efforts of the participants, volunteers and corporate and community partners brings us one step closer to our vision of creating a future without breast cancer, and for that we are so very grateful and appreciative of their support.
