Brantford police say a Grand Erie District School Board (GEDSB) teacher is facing sexual assault charges involving an "inappropriate relationship" with a high school student from more than 20 years ago.

Police said they learned of the allegations in April.

"The Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit are actively investigating the offences, which were alleged to have occurred over two decades ago," read a media release.

"The accused was still teaching with a local school board, but has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the court proceedings."

SpokespersonRobin Matthews-Osmondsaid in an email they aren't releasing some information, including the teacher's name,to avoid identifying the victim.

GEDSBdidn't share any information about the circumstances when asked for comment.

"Grand Erie cannot comment on the investigation or proceedings and is cooperating fully with the investigation," read an email.

"Grand Erie remains committed to supporting a safe environment in our schools. Counselling and mental health supports are available to students and staff should they want to use them."

The accused faces two sexual assault charges and two sexual exploitation charges.

This comes less than a week after Halton policecharged a Burlingtonelementary school teacher in the case of an alleged sex crime involving a student dating back almost 40 years ago.

GEDSB and Brantford police said the Sexual Assault Centre of Brant offers a free 24-hour crisis and support line (519-751-3471) and its website also has information.
