A 72-year-old woman is dead, Hamilton police say, after the vehicle she was riding in was involved in a crash Thursday.

A Honda Accord driven by a Hamilton man was heading north on Highway 56 near Hall Road around 6 p.m. when a GMC Sierra with a 40-year-old Hamilton man behind the wheel crossed the road in front of it, according to a media release.

The Honda hit the truck on its passenger side. The people inside the Sierra were not hurt, but the driver of the Honda, a 72-year-old Hamilton man, was taken to hospital. His 72-year-old passenger was also hurt and later died of her injuries, say police.

The collision reconstruction unit is continuing to investigate and the driver of the truck has been charged.

Police say they've determined impairment and speed were not factors in the crash.
