A 63-year-old Hamilton man has died, police say, after a fire on Sunday morning near Stoney Creek.

Hamilton's fire Chief David Cunliffe said firefighters responded to a fire at Ionic Apartments on Jerome Crescent in Riverdale West at 9 a.m.

Cunliffe said there was heavy smoke coming from an apartment on the first floor.

Hamilton police said, in a Tuesday media release, a man was found unresponsive in a chair.

Cunliffe said firefighters got him out of the building and tried to revive him before paramedics rushed him to a hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

The fire was brought under control, but caused roughly $400,000 worth of damage, according to Cunliffe.

Hamilton police said the Ontario Fire Marshal is leading the investigation.

The fire is not considered to be suspicious at this time, according to police.
