Hamilton Votes: Who's running in Hamilton Mountain

It's a recent NDP stronghold riding with a historical reputation of close calls and swing-ing between orange, red and blue. Hamilton Mountain is currently orange under NDP MP Scott Duvall.

In 1988, the Liberals won against the NDPbyfewerthan a hundred votes. Only 3,000 votes separated the first and third-place finishers in the 2004 election, resulting in a narrow Liberal victory.

Following the Liberal Party's decrease in popularity in the late 2000s, the Conservatives became the main competitors to the NDPin the riding.

Description:Hamilton Mountain is home to contrasting socio-economic populations, including low-income public housing residents, as well as million dollar estates. It is made up ofhighly paid unionized workers and low-wage workers, and well-established families, as well asrecent immigrants.

Given this diversity, the riding of Hamilton Mountain is oftena swing riding in federal elections, with some races ending in close ties between candidates.

Just over 97,000 people in the riding listed English as their primary and only language. Other prominent languages in Hamilton Mountain include Arabic, Spanish and Italian.

Provincially, Monique Taylor of the NDP holds the seat representing the riding.

Meet the candidates:

Scott Duvall, NDP

First elected to parliament in 2015, Duvall is a former community leader who has lived and worked in Hamilton Mountain for over two decades. He currently serves as the NDP's official critic for Pensions and the Federal Economic Development Agency for southern Ontario. Beforeentering parliament, Duvall was aHamilton City Councillor for Ward 7.

Bruno Uggenti, Liberal

Uggenti is a former lawyer whobuilt his own legal practice,Campbell Mihailovich Uggenti, before entering politics. He was born and raised in Hamilton, and continues to work and live with his wife, Karen, in the riding. Uggentiwants to focus on entrepreneurs and small businesses in Hamilton Mountain.

Peter Dyakowski, Conservative

The former Tiger-Cats player first came to Hamilton in 2006 when he was drafted by the team. Dyakowski was the first ever Canadian football player to receive a full scholarship at Louisiana State University, where he won the NCAA National Championship. He wantsHamilton families to "be able to see their kids stay" and "find stable, rewarding careers"in the city.

Dave Urquhart, Green

Urquhart is a retiredHamiltonsteel industry worker. He's been involvedwith local chapters of Blue Dot, the Council of Canadians and 350.org. Urquhartwas a previous candidate for the Green Partyin 2015 in the riding of FlamboroughGlanbrook, and the Green Party of Ontario in 2018 in the Hamilton Mountain riding. He is focused on transitioning from a fossil fuel economy to a clean energy economy.
