The City of Hamilton is warning residents about a door-to-door scam involvingpeople claiming to work for the city.

In the past couple weeks there have been four separate complaints from residents. A few homeowners complained that someone visited them, asking to test their water for lead.

In one case, when the woman refused to let the person in, he told the homeowner she faced a $100 fine. In another case, a person claiming to be a city worker called a resident askingabout garbage. The person later came to the home, but refused to provide a city I.D..

City officials notethat anycity worker sent to a home must havea cityidentification card as well as aCity of Hamilton uniform.

"We just want to remind people that if city workers come to your door, they'll be wearing a city vest or hardhat or uniform," said Kelly Anderson, communications officer with the Public Works Department. "But we don't typically go door to door."

Anderson says property owners who are approached by unsolicited contractors or peopleclaiming to be affiliated with the city should report the incident to Hamilton Police or the City at 905-546-CITY (2489).
