HWDSB director 'very concerned' about lack of math curriculum

The director of Hamilton's public school board says he's "very concerned" the Ontario government has yet to release the math curriculum for the upcoming school year.

Manny Figueiredo, director of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB), says the longer thewait, the less time educators will have to get the training they need to teach it.

"We've been told through conversations it's coming soon. We've flagged the concern that we are now heading into June and there's very little time for our educators to be ready," Figueiredo said during a Monday evening board meeting.

"We will do our best and we know there are resources being developed over the summer, but we really are concerned it's come, to this point, so late."

The comments came days before the province declared students wouldn't return to in-person learning until September.

It also follows aCBC News questionnaire of local educators who highlighted concerns about how the pandemic has affected students' ability to learn and connect with school.

Figueiredoalso saidthe board is also awaiting details on provincial plans to reopen schools this fall.

"We're hearing they're going to come some time in early August, is our hope," he said.

The province is also mulling over what role remote learning will have in education after the pandemic ends, Figueiredo said.
