2 men charged with murder in the killing of Hamilton man Shane Grenier, police say

Two men have been charged with second-degree murder, police say, in connection with the killing of 39-year-old Hamilton manShane Grenier, the first homicide victim in the city in 2022.

Police said that justbefore 6p.m. on March 6, 2022 they were called to the area of Tisdale Street South and Erie Avenue. They said that they found "a male lying on the ground and suffering from a gunshot wound."

A release from police on March 8 said "Shane's family are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of their family member."

Police said "In the wake of this crime, Shane's family have requested privacy to grieve their loss."

Police said they found Grenier with a gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to hospital and died shortly after.

On Wednesday afternoon police announced that two 21-year-old men from Hamilton,Owen Nathaniel Silverthorneand Janeil Gordon, have been charged with second-degree murder and taken into custody. Bereziuk said both men were arrested in the city without incident.

The night before, residents in the area reportedly heard gunshots in the area, Bereziuk said.

He said surveillance video from the area showed a black, four-door BMW with silver rims was parked near the scene before driving north toward Main Street, then east along Main.

He asked residents to check their security camera footage from 5:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m Sunday for the BMW or anyone who seems suspicious.

In a Wednesday afternoon press conference, Bereziukrevealed that Grenier knew Silverthorne and Gordon, but they were not friends. Bereziuk said that drugs were involved but did not go into further detail on motive. Bereziuk said that while Grenier was known to police before his death, it was for minor incidents and nothing he would consider "overtly significant."

Bereziuk said the investigation is ongoing and encourages anyone with additional information to come forward, specifically to Det. Mike Deaver with the homicide unit.
