MPP Fife's motion passes, province to make commitment to Kitchener Toronto GO

Kitchener-Waterloo NDP MPPCatherine Fife's motion asking the Liberal government to commit to clear funding and a clear timeline for all-day, two-way GO service between Toronto and Kitchener passed unanimously Thursday.

The motion's passing means the province will have to give specific funding commitments and a timeline before April 2018.

Fife wanted to see "a firm funding and a firm timeline"in the provincial long-term infrastructure plan.

"The people of Kitchener-Waterloo have been asking for all-day, two-way GO for nearly a decade," said Fife in a release.

"I'm pleased that our arguments... were successful.Now, I'm looking forward to seeing the government's clear timeline and firm funding commitment before April 2018, and I don't intend to let Wynne disappoint families again." Fife said.

In the legislature Thursday afternoon, Fife pointed out that in May 2014 then-minister of transportation Glen Murraypromised all-day two-way GO trains wouldbecome a reality in five years time.

That date has now been revised from 2019 to 2024.

Metrolinx said in late November it is working on the environment assessment in order tobuilda freight bypass for CN Rail, so it can use a 30-kilometre track owned by CN for GO service between Georgetown and Bramalea.
