Cambridge boy, 5, wants politicians to help him save polar bears

Theo Davidson Snider loves polar bears.

And after watching the nature documentary series Frozen Planet, five-year-old Theo called it "sad planet" because he saw the effects climate change has been having on the environment, particularly in the north.

Sobefore the election was called he wrote a letter to the prime minister as well as some local candidates running in the federal election.

When asked why he wrote to the politicians about polar bears, he said, "because they are dying."

Mom Jane Davidson said her son started to cry while watching the documentary series.

She says she encouraged him to write to politicians to share his thoughts and two local politicians responded: Liberal candidate Bryan May and NDP candidate Scott Hamilton.

They are both running in Cambridge and they face Conservative Sunny Attwal, Green Party candidate Michele Braniff, David Haskell of the People's Party of Canada and Manuel Couto of the Marxist-Leninist Party.

Haskell, Attwal and Braniff indicated to CBC K-W they never received a letter from the boy. It's unclear if the letter was sent toCouto.

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau did not write Theo back.

Davidson says she hopes the politicians listen to the voices of people speaking up about climate change, no matter what their age.

"It's scary," she said. "When your five-year-old child says to you, and then writes in a letter to the prime minister, 'I don't want to die,' it's a pretty scary world that we're living in. For me, we need to look at the world and we need to look at what needs to be done and we need to say, if you are not willing to do what needs to be done to help the climate, then you will not have my vote."
