Decorate for Diwali contest aims to spread light in the darkness

As the Hindu community in Waterloo region prepares to celebrate Diwali this weekend, organizers with the Radha Krishna Mandir in Cambridge are hoping to spread the light to the wider community by inviting people to set up their holiday lights a little early this year.

Diwali is a five-day holiday that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

It's a theme that feels especially relevant this year, said Tribu Persaud, a director with the Radha Krishna Mandir.

"It's been a pretty tough year for a lot of people in terms of spirit and spirituality and being able to connect," said Persaud.

"We're just hoping that putting up these lights, and seeing these lights, and driving by them, brings a little bit of joy into people's lives and maybe extends the Christmas season a little longer."

Contest open to all

It's also a safe thing to do from home, given that large gatherings aren't feasible right now, Persaud said.

The temple is hosting a Decorate for Diwali contest and is asking anyone lighting up their home to submit photos for a prize draw happening Nov. 21.

Anyone can participate, Persaud said. You don't have to be a part of the Hindu community, or even own a house he said decorated dorm rooms and apartments are more than welcome.
