Liberal Bardish Chagger re-elected in Waterloo riding

Liberal incumbent and former House Leader Bardish Chagger has been re-elected in the riding of Waterloo with about 48 per cent of the popular vote.

Conservative Jerry Zhangended the night with about24per cent, NDP's Lori Campbell received 16 per cent, Kirsten Wright of the Green Party has captured about 10per centand Erika Traub of the People's Party wonabout two per cent.

Voter turnout was 70.8 per cent, down 5.3 per cent from 2015.

In the 2015 election, Chagger won with 49.7 per cent of the vote.

Chagger also served in the previous government as former minister of small business and tourism.

Before getting into politics, Chagger worked at the Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Centre.

When CBC Kitchener-Waterloo asked candidates what people need to know about them as individuals, Chagger said, "upon election four years ago, I chose to move the MP's office to Waterloo City Hall.

Waterloo is the only riding that I know of in Canada where the MP, the MPP, and the mayor are all located in the same building. I believe that all levels of government should work better together for the good people of Waterloo."

Riding

The riding of Waterloo has85,761 voters according to Elections Canada.

Since the riding was created in 1966, it'sbeen held by the Liberals, Conservatives and NDP.

Waterloo is the most historic riding in the region. It was created in 1966 when the ridings of Waterloo North and Waterloo South which includes all of Waterloo region were broken up into smaller ridings.

Between 1993 and 2015, though, the riding was split into Waterloo-Wellington and Kitchener-Waterloo.
