Bulky item pickup returns Monday to curbside garbage schedule

A fridge that doesn't work, an old couch or the ripped up carpet you've been waiting to chuck can all go at the curb on regular waste collection days starting on Monday.

The Region of Waterloo announced on Thursday that people can return to placing bulky items at the curb. Kitchener and the townships will see bulky pickup begin on Monday while Cambridge and Waterloo can start the week of June 1.

On March 30 as a way to protect collection workers, the region put a hold on bulky item pickup because of COVID-19.

"Residents' ability to hold their bulky items has been greatly appreciated," the region said in a release.

The region reminded people that only three bulky items per household are permitted at the curb or 10items for small apartments of up to six units.

"The large item limits will be strictly enforced, as we expect to see more than the average number of households set out large items for collection the first few weeks," the region said.

The region recommends people use its website to search for Waste Whiz, to determine what items are eligible for pickup.

Last month, the region re-started yard waste pickup. Waste transfer stations in Waterloo and Cambridge reopened earlier this month.
