The City of Kitchener says it hopes to re-open the Walter Bean Trail on Friday. It was closed after flood waters damaged sections of the trail.

The Walter Bean Trail is set to re-open on Friday, after flood waters damaged sections of the trail and closed it to the publiclast week.

The trail runs along the Grand River through Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge andWoolwichTownship.Record-setting rain at the end of June damaged some sections and submerged others. Rushing water also created deep ruts in some sections and left debris on the trail.

"Staff have spent the better part of this week building up the base ... in the areas where there were ruts and washouts," said Victoria Raab, spokesperson for the City of Kitchener.

Raab said the finer stone dust that tops the trail will be laid down on Wednesday.

"There are still some areas that probably need more significant work than that, in terms of rebuilding retaining walls and those sorts of things, but the trail in general willhopefullybe open as of Friday."
