A man from the Greater Toronto Area is recovering from non-life threatening injuries after he was shot in Waterloo early Friday morning, police say.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service says officers were called to a plaza in the area of King Street N. and University Avenue E. just after 2 a.m. after reports of multiple gunshots being fired.

Officers found a 26-year-old man with injuries and he was taken to hospital.

Police say it's believed this was a targeted shooting.

Still, in a release, police reminded residents"remain vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals."

An investigation is underway.

The shooting came less than 36 hours after a woman was shot and killed in Cambridge.

Helen Schaller, 58, was shot in the area of King Street E., near Church Street and Westminster Drive in Preston around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police continue to investigate her death.
