Aboriginal Solidarity Day celebrated in London

A sunrise ceremony in Wortley Village started off the day of solidarity

A sunrise ceremony on the Green in Wortley Village kicked off Aboriginal Solidarity Day in London.

The ceremony was lead by Elder Mike Hopkins Sr., who spoke about the importance of including all cultures in the ceremony and in the day's festivities.

A pow wow and grand entry is planned for noon, also on the Green, located at ElmwoodAvenue and Wortley Road.

The day includes food, craft vendors as well as a smoke dance and long house social dancing.

Canada has celebratedNational Aboriginal Day since the 1990s. It is held on June 21, the summer solstice.

Earlier this morning, the Canadian government announced it will rename the day National Indigenous Peoples Day.
