An assault just south of the Western University gates on Saturday night left two people in hospital with non-life threatening injuries, London police say.

Police said a weapon was involved, but provided no other information.

The pair were locatedby officers near Richmond and Huron streets around 9:45 p.m. after police were asked to check on the welfare of an individual.

Both were transported to hospital by paramedics.

Police did not say if the incident was connected to off-campus parties which were taking place in the area.

Officers had closed Huron Street west of Richmond Street late Saturday afternoon, and reduced lanes along Richmond, as large crowds of Western students and other young people amassed for unsanctioned Homecoming parties.

Further information about arrests, calls, fines, and injuries for the unsanctioned gatherings won't be available until at least Tuesday, a police spokesperson said Sunday.

Last year, about 10,000 people took part in homecoming parties, with 31 people treated at local hospitals.
