Grad ceremonies postponed at Thames Valley schools due to COVID-19

In what is an important milestone for students across the region, Grade 8 and Grade 12 graduation ceremonies have been postponed.

Thousands of graduates will have to wait to experience their graduation and prom until the fall

Parents are pushing back against the Thames Valley District School Board's proposed boundary changes because they believe it will make for long commutes and disrupt social circles that students have formed.

In what is an important milestone for students across the region, Grade 8 and Grade 12 graduation ceremonies have been postponed.

The Thames Valley District School Board (TVDSB) announced the decision Wednesday, based on the uncertainty around when the government will lift restrictions on gatherings of more than five people, and the time and resources needed to organize year-end ceremonies.

"We recognize this is very disappointing news for students and families," said Mark Fisher, director of education for the TVDSB in a statement.

"But the safety and well-being of our students, families and staff remain our highest priority."

The board said they will make every effort to hold ceremonies in the fall.

TVDSBwill also work to "find alternate ways to recognize students' accomplishments and milestones that are in line with public health guidelines."

CBC News has reached out to the London District Catholic School Board for an update on their graduation ceremony plans.
