Pilot seriously injured in home-built plane crash in Dutton, Ont.

A 67-year-old pilot suffered serious injuries in a home-built plane crash in Dutton, Ont., about 35 kilometres southwest of London, Thursday evening.

Elgin County OPP, Dutton/DunwichFire and EMSwere called to Leitch Street at about 6:15 p.m. to a report of a downed single-engine aircraft.

Emergency crews arrived on scene to find an amateur home-built aircraft had collided with the foundation of a home being built in the developing subdivision. Police say the plane had gone down short of a grass landing strip when it hit the home.

The pilot, who hasn't been identified, was extricated from the plane and flown by Ornge air ambulance to hospital with injuries considered serious and life-altering.

The collision is being investigated by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

Police say the plane is a Rutan, Long-EZ, single engine piston kit plane, a model that has been available to home-built plane enthusiasts for over 40 years.
