Woman killed, 3 in hospital after ambulance-SUV collision on Highway 16

One person is dead and three others are in hospital after a head-on crash between an ambulance and an SUV in Manitoba.

Crash took place early Thursday between Neepawa and Gladstone

One person is dead and three others are in hospital after a head-on crash between an ambulance and an SUV in Manitoba.

The ambulance was transporting a patientto Winnipeg fromNeepawa around 5:30 a.m. Thursday, when the collision occurredon Highway 16,Prairie Mountain emergency medical service director Louise Stittsaid.

The SUV's driver, a36-year-old woman from Winnipeg, was killed in the accident, RCMP Cpl. JulieCourchainesaid, noting"visibility and road conditions" were poorin the area at the time.

A patient in the ambulance, as well as the two paramedics a man and a woman, both 37 years oldare in hospital in Neepawa. There is no word on their condition.

Collisions involving ambulances are rare, said Michelle Gawronsky, president of the Manitoba Government and general Employees Union, which represents paramedics.

"What most folks don't realize is that these ambulances, it's different than driving a car. There's weight behind these ambulances. It takes longer to stop," she said.

Manitoba Highways had closeda section of Highway 16 between Neepawa and Gladstone, from Provincial Road 352 to Road 74 North, for several hours.

It has since been reopened.
