Child sex offender expected to live in Winnipeg, police warn

A convicted child sex offender considered to be ahigh risk for further crimes is being released from jail and expected to live in Winnipeg.

The Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit (MIHRSOU), a joint forces unit of the Winnipeg policeand the RCMP, issued a notification aboutRyan James Gabourie on Monday the day he isto be released from Headingley Correctional Institution.

Gabourie, 32, has a history of sexual offences in relation to children, including sexual assault, break and enter to commit sexual assault, possession of child pornography,as well as many other criminal offences, according to the MIHRSOU.

Although heparticipated in some sex offender treatment while in prison, he is still considered a high risk to re-offend. Male and female children are at risk.

Gabourie's previous offences involve sexually molesting five young boys, between the ages of fiveand 11,by entering their homes through unlocked windows or doors and sexually assaulting them in their beds while their families were sleeping nearby.

He entered the homes of another boy and girl in the same manner but was discovered before he committed any additional offences, police said, adding the victims were unknown to Gabourie.

He would choose homes where childrens toys were visible in the yard or could be seen inside the homes by peering in through windows.He has also been arrested for being in the possession of child pornography.

Gabourie'sprobation order prohibits him from:

• Attending a public park or public swimming area where persons under the age of 14 are present or can reasonably be expected to be present, or a day care centre, school ground, playground or community centre.
• Having any contact or communication with persons under the age of 16, except through unavoidable encounters in public places or as allowed by his probation officer in writing.
• Having possession of a computer or Internet access.

He will also be subject to a daily curfew of10p.m. to 9a.m.

"Any form of vigilante activity or other unreasonable conduct directed at Ryan James Gabouriewill not be tolerated," stated the release from the MIHRSOU.
