City puts $3M into St. Vital pool renovations

The City of Winnipeg has announced plans for a $3-million makeover of the St. Vital Centennial outdoor pool.

Heated pool, multiple spray features among highlights of improved facility

The City of Winnipeg has announced plans for a $3-million makeover of theSt. Vital Centennial outdoor pool.

The St. Vital Centennial pool has been a popular summertime destination for neighbourhood families for over 45 years.The improvements planned for this facility will improve its accessibility and make it more enjoyable for users of all ages and abilities, saidMayor SamKatz.

The project involves the refurbishment and repair of the existing pool andnew pool mechanical systems, including a heating systemand a new pool building complete with standard and family change rooms, washrooms and lockers.

I first came to the poolin the late 1960s when my mother brought my sisters and I to swim, said Coun.BrianMayes. Last year I returned with my sons and realized the facility had hardly changed at all [so]Im pleased to say that after next year there will be some incredible changes."

Other features:

  • An accessible beach entry area (a gradual slope into the water)with multiple spray features.
  • New pathways, pool decking, fencing and landscaping.
  • Redevelopment of the playground area, including a new play structure and swings.
  • New bike racks and a connection to the Fermor Avenue active transportation pathway.

The new facility will be completely accessible and will include a drop-off lane in the parking lot.

Construction will begin in spring 2014with completion expected in fall 2014.
